SQL Database Admin

Job Description

As a SQL DBA with Safeguard Properties, you will be responsible for the entire Safeguard SQL database environment, including planning, design, installation, and management of all databases in a high availability, high performance configuration. You will be part of a dynamic team delivering and supporting technology infrastructure to meet the substantial growth needs of the business. The SQL DBA must be able to work effectively and efficiently in a fast paced office environment to meet commitment dates and project time lines. The SQL DBA must be able to multitask and adjust to changing priorities. A sense of urgency, ability to make good decisions and solid prioritization skills are necessary. The SQL DBA must be able to support mission critical applications in a 24x7 environment, provide technical leadership and supervise SQL staff. You will serve as a liaison between the SQL team and other IT groups to facilitate a consistent and predictable server and database performance model. You will interface directly with Application Development staff and play a key role in the architecture and deployment of new systems and databases.



 


Responsibilities and Expectations


  • Perform day to day database system administration, including:  daily checklists, backup verification, log review, security maintenance, performance tuning (analysis, indexing, updating statistics, etc.)

  • Take ownership and lead database and/or reporting related projects with varying degrees of complexity

  • Create, review and maintain code in our database systems to optimize, standardize and/or prepare for upgrades

  • Create, maintain, update and troubleshoot SSIS packages

  • Upgrade, configure and maintain server and database monitoring software to baseline system performance and proactively identify (and remedy) potential issues

  • Conduct resource monitoring and capacity planning

  • Review, test, update and document detailed disaster recovery/business continuity plans for key production SQL Servers (database mirroring, log shipping, replication, clustering) in a VM/SAN environment

  • Perform SSRS administration, updates, troubleshooting and development

  • Perform database backup and recovery as required, including periodic testing

  • Review, test, recommend and install upgrades of database software, including patches and major releases

  • Perform ongoing review and completion of trouble tickets related to database systems

  • Train and mentor junior team members on process and technology including assisting Infrastructure leadership in the review and development plans for all SQL DBAs

  • Maintain an accurate account of all database assets

  • Work with Infrastructure leadership in the execution of all security compliance initiatives

  • Develop reporting metrics in all areas

  • Documents all systems and procedures

  • Manage relationship between SQL department and its customers and stakeholders

  • The primary duties of this position occur during business hours, however there is some evening and weekend work related to projects, planned maintenance, and on-call support

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field of study, specialized training or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an enterprise SQL environment

  • Ability to multi-task and manage conflicting demands

  • Deep understanding of IT roles and typical skill levels by role

  • Knowledge of the project lifecycle and the application development lifecycle, role/skill relevancy by phase

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with strong collaboration skills

  • Proven proficiency in the following:


o   SQL Server 2008R2, 2012, 2014


o   SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)


o   SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)


o   SQL Monitoring


o   SQL Backup and Recovery


o   SQL Performance Tuning


o   SQL Server Mirroring, Log Shipping, Clustering, AlwaysOn



  • Work experience with the following is a plus:


o   Microsoft Navision


o   RSA Archer
