Director, Design - Latin America and the Caribbean

Job Description

The Director of Design - Latin America and the Caribbean will review and provide design guidance and submit design approval for all new hotel development and existing hotel renovation projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Team Member will work closely with Global Brands' leadership teams to establish design direction, and key brand identity elements specific to this region. (Location: Miami, FL or South America)


What will I be doing?

The Director of Design - Latin America and the Caribbean will clearly communicate to outside design professionals to establish brand design requirements. The Team Member will also act as a representative of Hilton, the Architecture Construction and Design Latin American and Caribbean team and the Global Design Services group, as well as support the functions and report back on a regular basis to the Senior Director of Design to ensure consistency in the delivery of the Brands DNA.


Other key priorities are listed below:

  • Execute strategies and directions for new hotel construction and renovation projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, evaluating efforts to ensure effectiveness and efficiency
  • Implement plans for identified hotel development opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean and directs accordingly
  • Prepare design guidelines for Latin America and the Caribbean Projects
  • Execute the strategic planning and coordination of Design Services - Latin America and the Caribbean, to advance company goals, while supporting and directing communication plans of key messages to internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop an execution plan to implement long term goals for Design Services - Latin America and the Caribbean that become the basis for short term goals and annual operational planning
  • Develop the appropriate objectives for the business and direct the means and methodologies by which those objectives are going to be accomplished
  • Implement the direction given by executive management, to ensure the overall strategic direction of Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean is consistent with and supported by Human Resources, Legal and Finance
  • Identify and oversee resources and activities of Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean and confer as appropriate with key stakeholders and departments, so objectives are accomplished
  • Direct the grouping of and assignment of tasks, while ensuring optimal allocation of resources
  • Ensure the communication plan, as established by the department head and the Senior Director of Design Latin America and the Caribbean, is properly executed
  • Oversee and evaluate business processes to maximize efficiency and effectiveness within the department
  • Manage the cross-functional links between Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean (Project Management, Development, Food and Beverage, Spa and Hotel Operations)
  • Implement measurements of Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean to ensure effectiveness, usage and awareness
  • Work effectively with other Global Design groups to create a common design management approach and methodology
  • Work with the pre-opening team on new hotel openings
  • Direct the development and administration of assigned projects in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Provide direction and directives to the developers, owners, design consultants and Project Directors
  • Guide and direct the various hotel design consultants on each project
  • Execute the directives of the organization's mission, goals and objectives and demonstrate them through ongoing and direct motivation, communication, group dynamics and leadership
  • Manage effective partnerships and conduct effective management of third party partners
  • Identify primary vendors; negotiate and monitor the quality and cost of services
  • Review designs at all stages of projects for conformity to specific brand standards and Design and Construction guidelines and Corporate Brand Direction
  • Manage assigned projects for Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to Hilton management, owners and other technical services
  • Ensure appropriate talent is identified in compliance with department staffing plan
  • Develop current talent to achieve greater strategic goals and performance
  • Determine staffing needs and support the Senior Director of Design in the recruiting, selecting, hiring, training and developing of departmental Team Members
  • Work with direct reports on goals to assist in accomplishing department initiatives, and their own career objectives
  • Direct and implement proper controls for Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Implement and maintain systems within Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Translate organizational goals and objectives into performance standards for division, department and individual positions
  • Assess actual performance against standards to determine whether the department is on target to reach its goals and take corrective actions as necessary
  • Ensure the business plan and goals are being followed and achieved, providing feedback or revising the plan, if needed
  • Establish and enforce policies and procedures that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the Company
  • Monitor the return on invested capital and time resources
  • Evaluate Design Services- Latin America and the Caribbean assigned work within targeted markets
  • Work within established departmental budget
  • Review and make appropriate adjustments in activities and expenses throughout the fiscal year to ensure optimal financial results
  • Help build the strength of the brands by ensuring owner and developer compliance
  • Support Global Design Services in maintaining and updating the Brand design direction and the Design and Construction Standards
  • Provide technical assistance to the Development team prior to application, to facilitate project approval
  • Track and update internal project data to maintain all projects current in database
  • Work with design firms to design and establish standard guest room décor packages and other key brand defining elements
  • Work with Operations (in managed hotels) to provide timely design reviews and approvals
  • Stay knowledgeable about the Hotel Design industry and work to introduce new products and materials to the company as well as guiding design groups to their availability and potential project applications
  • Ability to direct collaborative efforts of other resources throughout the Hilton organization, possibly including internal resources, external resources and other constituent groups as appropriate with aim of furthering Company goals
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills, as well as excellent written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze departmental financial data as required in order to make strategic and tactical decisions
  • Ability to manage change, resolve conflicts and ensure collaboration within teams and/or units; includes maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity
  • Absolute discretion and confidentiality regarding sensitive information
  • Ability to take initiative to identify, prioritize and implement all elements required for the team to fulfill responsibilities in keeping with core strategic goals
  • Strong problem solving skills, including ability to effectively address any issue in collaboration with others as appropriate; ability to proactively identify and prevent potential problems; ability to develop problem solving skills among direct reports and other Team Members as appropriate
  • Ability to advocate and implement professional development for self, and others, including capability to work with peers and other resources to provide development and mentoring opportunities; includes adherence to organization's standards for performance feedback
  • Understanding of the principles and practical application of Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Budget development and management skills, including the ability to track expenses against commitments, set priorities for funding, and develop annual budgets


What are we looking for?

To fulfill this role successfully, you must possess the following minimum qualifications and experience:

  • BA/BS Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Interior Design
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in Hospitality Design roles, including a minimum of two (2) years of management experience
  • Fluent English - written and spoken
  • Ability to travel as required (75%)

It would be advantageous in this position for you to demonstrate the following capabilities and distinctions:

  • MA/MS Master's Degree
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of Hospitality industry experience, with a mix of experience from various Design roles
  • A minimum of three (3) years of managerial experience
  • In-depth knowledge of design principals
  • Licensed Architect (highly preferable)
  • Fluent Spanish - written and spoken
